Bethesda Magazine: Pop-Up Shops Make a Comeback at Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station

Metro, developer schedule special events, musical performances in October.

Busy commuters can grab a cup of coffee or some freshly baked bread as they enter the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro station with the return of pop-up shops in October.

Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday until Oct. 27, retailers will sell their goods out of 4000-series rail cars that have been cut in half and converted into vendor kiosks, according to a press release.

Fivesquares Development and Metro officials partnered this spring to bring pop-up shops to the station plaza. The seven-week trial was so successful, they decided to bring the vendors back, according to a press release.

The fall vendors will include: Borekg Turkish bakery, Galley foods, Great Harvest Bread Co., Millie’s International Creations, the Red Bandana Bakery, Yoga in a Bowl, BeAdmired, Creative Arts, Freshblend Juices, Mayorga Organics and Spring Mill Bread Co.

Strathmore artists in residence will play music at the station from 4 to 6 p.m.

Chuck Holden, Oct. 11

  • The Ladies of the Outskirts, Oct. 12

  • Herb and Hanson, Oct. 13

  • Bliss the Electric, Oct. 18

  • Wytold, Oct. 20

  • 29 & Georgia, Oct. 25

  • Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School Chorus, Oct. 26

  • Be Steadwell, Oct. 27

Metro and Fivesquares will hold several free special events at the station on Saturdays this month:

  • Family Arts and Chalk Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 14. Children are invited to draw with chalk, create wind charms and play with a giant Jenga set.

  • Movie at the Metro at 7 p.m. Oct. 21. Attendees will watch “Hotel Transylvania” and can snack on free popcorn.

  • Bike Connectivity Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 28. Community members can come for tutorials on cycling to work and handling roadside bike repairs.

Fivesquares is planning on buying the Metro-owned surface parking lot at the station for a large mixed-use development. County Council members are set to review the proposal Oct. 24 as part of a discussion on a growth plan for the Grosvenor-Strathmore area.
